What are Cataracts?

As your eyes get older, the natural lens inside them can lose its clarity, developing what's known as a cataract. This condition develops when lens proteins deteriorate and cluster together, creating a clouding effect that's like peering through a misty windowpane. Daily activities become challenging - reading materials appear blurry, nighttime driving turns hazardous, and faces lose their sharp definition. While cataracts affect countless individuals globally, modern surgical techniques offer an effective solution to bring back crystal-clear vision.

What Is Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery?

Robotic Laser Cataract Surgery, or laser cataract surgery, uses advanced femtosecond lasers, the same type of laser used in LASIK eye surgery, to enhance several steps of the procedure. Typically, cataract surgeons use a scalpel to make an incision in the cornea and access the lens capsule. Then, they use an ultrasonic device to break apart your cataracts. Instead of relying on manual techniques, the laser used in robotic cataract surgery creates the incisions, opens the lens capsule, and breaks up the cataract-affected natural lens. The ALLY Robotic Cataract System also provides your cataract surgeon with a 3-D view of your eye. This level of accuracy can help them be more precise when placing new lens implants, improving patient outcomes and help ensure optimal results for your vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cataracts typically develop over a long period of time, as the proteins within the natural lens start to break down and form clumps that cloud your vision. They are usually age-related, and you may not notice any symptoms for years. As cataracts progress further, you may notice symptoms like:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision
  • Poor night vision
  • Seeing halos or glare around lights
  • Difficulty reading in low-light environments
  • ncreased nearsightedness
  • Needing frequent prescription changes
  • Faded or yellowed colors
  • Double vision

If these symptoms begin impacting your ability to do things like driving, reading, working, socializing, or enjoying your favorite activities, it is time to consider cataract surgery. When you schedule an appointment with Dr. Jim Loden, he will perform a comprehensive eye exam to diagnose your cataracts and assess how far they have progressed. Once detected and diagnosed, he can go over various lens implant options and determine which one is best for you.

Dr. Loden will use lens implants, also known as intraocular lenses (IOL) replace the cataract-affected natural lens of the eye during your laser-assisted cataract surgery. At your cataract surgery consultation, he will discuss the options offered at Loden Vision Centers and use factors like your medical history, lifestyle, and vision needs to determine the best lens implant for you. Depending on your unique circumstances, your eye doctor may recommend different IOLs, including monofocal lenses, which correct vision at one distance, an astigmatism-correcting lenses, multifocal/accommodative lenses, which improve vision across multiple distances, or trifocal lenses, which provide clear vision across three distinct distances. If you select a premium lifestyle lens implant for your laser-assisted cataract surgery, you may be able to achieve even better vision than you had before developing cataracts.

After robotic laser cataract surgery, you will need a family member or friend to drive you home to begin recovery. They will also need to drive you to your follow-up appointments until you are cleared by Dr. Loden to resume driving. Make sure to follow all of his postoperative directions, including applying prescription eye drops, not rubbing your eye, refraining from strenuous physical activity, and wearing UV-protective sunglasses when outside. Your vision will continue to improve as you heal, with most patients noticing visual improvements and returning to most activities within the first one to three days after the procedure. Once you’re fully healed, you can start enjoying your new cataract-free vision and get back to all the things you love with improved clarity!
