Am I a Candidate for LASIK?
Some people think that everyone is a candidate for LASIK, but unfortunately, that simply isn’t the case. In order to be a candidate, you need to have healthy eyes and be at least 18 years of age. There are several other factors that your doctor will consider before giving you the greenlight on LASIK. To truly determine if you are a candidate for LASIK surgery, you will need to come in for a consultation.
Will I have better vision immediately?
One of the best things about LASIK is that it provides fast results. You will see better shortly after the procedure, but your vision can continue to change for the next several months. Many people don’t achieve full results for another six months after surgery.
How long does the procedure take?
While most surgeries take a long time, that isn’t the case with LASIK. The procedure takes about 15 minutes, although you will likely be at the surgeon’s office for two to three hours. That will give the team time to prep you for surgery, and it will allow you enough time to recover after surgery.
What happens if I don’t achieve my desired outcome?
We cannot guarantee 20/20 vision, but we can give you a range of possible outcomes. If you don’t get the desired outcome, you might be a good candidate for a touch-up procedure, which could get you closer to 20/20 vision. In fact, many people end up with 20/20 vision either during the initial surgery or with the touch-up procedure.
I wear contacts. Can I still get LASIK?
Contact lenses change the curvature of your cornea. If you wear contact lenses, you will need to take them out at least two weeks prior to the surgery. This way, your corneas will revert back to their natural state and your LASIK surgeon will be able to provide precise results.
Can I do both eyes at once or do I need to have two procedures?
People typically get LASIK done in both eyes at once. The procedure is quick and relatively painless, so it is easy to get both eyes done at the same time. However, you can get one eye done at a time if you prefer. Be aware that doing one eye at a time may make it difficult to see before your second procedure.
Will I be able to see at night following LASIK?
There is a myth that night vision is permanently affected with LASIK, but most people are able to see normally at night within six months of the procedure. Your night vision might be restored even sooner than that.
